STATIC SUNDAY SPECIAL AT TROUW AMSTERDAM
| ||||||||
|
Sunday 25th of April saw Amsterdam football club Ajax meet its archival Feyenoord from Rotterdam in the Dutch Cup final. No worries, this is not a report on that soccer match. After the match we quickly headed for Amsterdam club Trouw where Static was well underway with its Sunday Special from with Raresh, Boris Werner and, tonight's host, Bart Skils.
In July 2008 the doors of Amsterdam club 11 closed forever after an eleven day marathon. It was in the 11 where Raresh played a legendary set with Ricardo Villalobos. As we speak the building that once was home to a very unique club is being demolished by demolition crews and their storm rams.
In early 2009, somewhat outside the city centre, the crew of 11 launched a new project in a building that used to belong to a Dutch newspaper. The newly founded club and restaurant was named after that newspaper, Trouw. Today, Trouw has more than established a name for itself with not only plenty of great nights but especially thanks to a very distinctive programming that sets Trouw apart from other clubs in the Dutch capital city. Where reporters of another Dutch newspaper (not Trouw) wrote about them being denied entrance to Trouw some months ago we of 365Mag were allowed in at tonight's Sunday Special of Static.
Right upon entering the venue stairways lead down to the Trouw basement. It is where friendly staff will watch over your coats and bags while you party one level above them. The basement is also where the toilets of the Trouw are located. This basement already gets you in the industrial vibe that breaths through the whole venue. At some nights, the Trouw basement will also have music played by DJ's. On most nights it will just be the music playing through the radio speakers of the lads at the wardrobe and toilet area. In order to get to the actual club and restaurant another pair of stairs has to be climbed up again.
Amongst Voltt in the Paradiso and Traffic in the Melkweg, Static is a series of minimal techno nights hosted by Amsterdam DJ Bart Skils. Other editions of Static in Trouw include those with Loco Dice and with Mathias Kaden & Onur Ozer. Tonight's special guest was the Romanian talent Raresh, known to be recommended to the German Cocoon label by Ricardo Villalobos. Some might argue Raresh's beats to be repetitive. Loops continuing for minutes with only minor changes. We like to call that hypnotic, and we simply love that style. Tonight's set, Raresh played only a few tracks like that and although the set did have some great moments, this set was not as special as other sets we have heard from Raresh.
Trouw utilizes the much beloved Funktion One speaker system that we wrote about so many times before. The club's subwoofers had cute girls dancing all over them, a usual but nonetheless beautiful sighting at the Trouw that would be forbidden at most other music venues.Raresh's set seemed to be over a little too quickly for our liking but Dutch DJ Boris Werner is an experienced crowd pleaser also with his up-tempo beats.
Today's event started from 16:00 with an open ending. It was easy to see the party would go on for a while but unsure it would last as long as until the early morning we decided to catch our last train home. Our visit of tonight may have been a little short in time but it was not difficult to see this was a great happening. Later turns out the party did not end before a back to back to back session between Raresh, Bart and Boris. It is a shame we had to miss it! | |
